The Eleanor And Joseph Wertheim Scholarship, Melbourne, Australia

Description
The Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship was established by the Dr Eleanor Wertheim Scholarship Trust. It aims to assist unmarried female students over the age of 25, enrolled full-time at the University of Melbourne, who are in very difficult circumstances.

Eligibility
Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:
  • be an unmarried, divorced or widowed female
  • be over 25 years of age by the application closing date
  • be an Australian citizen or hold an Australian permanent residency or permanent humanitarian visa
  • be an undergraduate, graduate coursework or research student, enrolled or planning to enrol full-time at the University of Melbourne (at least 37.5 points per semester) in 2010, with at least twelve months of full-time study remaining to complete their course
  • have a strong academic record
  • be able to demonstrate socially or financially compelling circumstances. Such as one or more of the following supporting documentation of these circumstances must be provided such as a letter from a relevant person such as a doctor, counsellor, social worker):
    • primary care responsibilities for a pre-school child
    • primary care responsibilities for school-aged children as a sole parent with limited access to outside support
    • primary care responsibilities for a disabled family member/dependant
    • medical condition/s
    • refugee background
    • financial difficulties
    Please note that part-time employment is not considered a compelling reason on its own (i.e. if there is not a medical condition or other difficulty
  • be able to provide documentary evidence that they are in receipt of means-tested income support from Centrelink
  • or, for students who believe they experience significant financial need but do not receive income support payments from Centrelink, provide evidence of financial need, including an explanation for the absence of support payments from Centrelink.  Evidence should include a statement from the applicant, together with a supporting statement from an independent party such as an accountant, financial counsellor or Student Financial Aid adviser.
  • have a strong academic record

Application Procedure
Submit to the Melbourne Scholarships Office:
  1. a completed application form.  The 2012 application form will be available for download from this website at the end of January.
  2. relevant documentary evidence of socially or financially compelling circumstances*
  3. an academic transcript (certified copy) of most recent studies if not a current student at the University of Melbourne
*Selection for the Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship is an extremely competitive process. Applicants who do not provide enough relevant documentary evidence to support their personal statement will be disadvantaged.

Timeline
The Eleanor and Joseph Wertheim Scholarship has been awarded for 2011.  The closing date for the 2012 application is 28 February 2012.
