PhD scholarship in Political Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

PhD scholarship in healthcare regulation in the European Union, focusing on processes of national implementation

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen. The position is available from the 1st of January 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The scholarship is an integrated part of the research project "Healthcare Regulation in the European Union: A Policy-Cycle Study of Complex Decision Making and Implementation".

The general research project examines the policy-cycle establishing cross-border healthcare in the European Union. The project combines a focus on the inter-institutional dynamics of EU policy-making with comparative research on implementation processes in selected member states.

The PhD project is pre-designed to undertake a study of implementation of the Directive on Patients rights in cross-border healthcare 2011/24/EU in selected member states. The PhD candidate is invited to examine implementation in France, Greece and the Czech Republic, but should the applicant prefer different countries, please feel free to suggest so. In addition, the PhD candidate will be encouraged to pay special attention to the role played by interest organisations for healthcare professionals, patients, insurance companies and private health care providers in the processes of national implementation. 

The department welcomes applications within the field of political science and public administration, but will be especially interested in proposals, demonstrating theoretical and empirical interest in EU studies, health care regulation and/or comparative implementation research.

The successful applicant will be part of a research team from University of Copenhagen, the Danish Institute of Governmental research, AKF and Leiden University, see project webpage http://polsci.ku.dk/english/research/healthcare_regulation_in_the_european_union. The project is funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research, the Sapere Aude research grant. 

The PhD student will be part of the Copenhagen Graduate School of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The PhD programme provides PhD students with strong research training which opens up a window of opportunity to a variety of careers within the private and public sectors. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching and other forms of knowledge dissemination.

Applications
  • The Faculty welcomes applications from all suitably qualified people regardless of age, gender, race, religion, ethnic background and citizenship.
  • In order to be awarded a PhD scholarship the applicant has to enrol as a PhD student at the Faculty of Social Sciences, cf. the rules of the Danish Ministerial Order No. 18 of 14 January 2008.
  • An assessment committee will evaluate the applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the assessment committee. When the assessment committee has finished the evaluation each applicant will receive the evaluation of his/her application. Selected applicants will be called for interview with the project director.

This PhD will only be offered as a 5+3 programme:
In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme the applicant must have completed a master´s degree successfully before starting his or her employment. PhD students are paid salary according to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the three-year employment period without additional pay. The work obligation can include for instance teaching.
