Presidential Scholarships for 2012 High School Graduates
Application Procedures
Presidential Scholarship award letters will be mailed in late-January for freshmen students entering the
University the following fall semester. The awards are made to the most qualified applicants who have
completed files by the priority deadline of December 1. Funds are depleted early, so applicants are urged to
apply early.
To be considered for scholarships, students must:
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Be a 2012 high school graduate
• Apply for admission to the University of South Alabama
• Complete, detach and return scholarship application
• Request official ACT or SAT scores be mailed to the USA Office of Admissions
• Request an official high school transcript be mailed to the Office of Admissions (transcript must show
   grades through the junior year and be mailed directly from the school)
• Complete the above procedures by December 1 for first consideration – funds are depleted early


Bay Area Freshman Scholarship Program for 2012 High School Graduates
High school seniors who are residents of Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama and the service areas in
Florida and Mississippi who meet the minimum academic and deadline requirements as shown below are
eligible for consideration for Bay Area Freshman Scholarships. To be considered, students should follow the
same instructions for consideration as the Presidential Scholarships shown in this brochure.

Honors Program Scholarships
The University of South Alabama Honors Program offers a curriculum of interdisciplinary excellence designed to stimulate analytical
and critical thinking of exceptionally qualified and highly motivated students. In this effort, the USA Honors Program challenges students
with scholarly activities, creative activities, exposes them to cultural enrichment and requires them to engage in community service.
To be considered for the USA Honors Program and Honors Program Scholarships, students must:
• Apply for admission to the University of South Alabama
• Request official ACT or SAT scores be mailed to the USA Office of Admissions
• Request an official high school transcript be mailed to the Office of Admissions (transcript must show
   grades through the junior year and be mailed directly from the school)
• Be a 2012 high school graduate
• Complete the separate Honors Program Application
• Complete the above procedures by December 9 for first consideration
• Acceptance of Honors Program scholarship will void previously awarded Presidential Scholarship

Abraham Mitchell Business Scholars Program
The University of South Alabama Mitchell Scholars Program offers extraordinary opportunities to pursue a challenging program of scholarly and research activities through the Mitchell College of Business. The Abraham Mitchell Scholars Program is made available
through an endowment by Abraham and Mayer Mitchell, prominent real estate developers and investors from Mobile, Alabama.
To be considered for the Abraham Mitchell Business Scholars Program, students must:
• Be a 2012 high school graduate
• Apply for admission to the University of South Alabama
• Request official ACT or SAT scores be mailed to the USA Office of Admissions
• Request an official high school transcript be mailed to the Office of Admissions (transcript must show
   grades  through the junior year and be mailed directly from the school)
• Major in the Mitchell College of Business
• Complete the above procedures by December 1 for first consideration

Community College Transfer Scholarships
Transfer students enrolling in the fall semester each year will be considered for $1,000 per year scholarships (three year maximum). Qualifications are based on the grade-point average earned at the two-year institution as computed by the USA Office of Admissions with thirty (30) or more earned hours at the two-year institution. To be considered, students must apply for admission for the summer or fall semester and have their official college transcripts mailed to USA Admissions by June 15. Awards are made in mid-summer. No scholarship application is required.

Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarships
USA will award four (4) Phi Theta Kappa scholarships per year. Phi Theta Kappa members enrolling in the fall semester each year will be considered for $1,500 per year scholarships (three year maximum). Qualifications are based on a minimum grade-point average of 3.70, as computed by the USA Office of Admissions, with thirty (30) or more earned hours at the two-year institution. To be considered, students must apply for admission to USA and have their official college transcripts mailed to USA Admissions by June 15. Phi Theta Kappa members must also submit a letter of recommendation from their two-year college PTK advisor with the application for admission. Awards are made in mid-summer. No scholarship application is required, however, consideration for this award is given to applications received on or before June 15.

Madge and Gladys Outlaw Alumni Scholarship/Alumni Freshman Scholarship
The USA National Alumni Association awards four (4) one-year $2,500 scholarships to entering freshmen. To be considered, students must have a minimum ACT composite score of 23, a 3.0 cumulative GPA (as computed by USA), demonstrate achievement in academics and leadership activities within the school and the community, and be an accepted freshman for the upcoming fall semester. Applications become available online at www.southalabama.edu/alumni/scholarships.html in January or by calling the Office of Alumni

Louise and Robert Locke Scholarship
$1,500 freshmen year scholarships are available to the most outstanding applicant from each of the four high schools in Choctaw County, Alabama. Accepted freshmen students from Choctaw County Alabama high schools are automatically considered in early spring.

Performance Scholarships
Athletic, Music and Dramatic Arts scholarships are available. Contact the respective department for information: Athletics: 251/460-7121, Music: 251/460-6136; Dramatic Arts: 251/460-6305.

ROTC Scholarships
Contact the Department of Air Force Studies at 251/460-7211 or the Department of Military Science (Army ROTC) at 251/460-6341 for information on two, three and four-year scholarships.

Mildred Coleman Starnes Nursing Scholarship
The Mildred Coleman Starnes Scholarship is an annual, renewable $7,500 per year scholarship awarded to outstanding freshmen entering the College of Nursing. Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA (as computed by USA), ACT composite of at least 19 (or comparable SAT), and be a graduate of a Clarke County, Alabama high school. Applications are mailed in the fall of each year to accepted students and Clarke County, Alabama high school counselors by the Office of Enrollment Services.

USA Freshman Leadership Scholarship
The USA Freshmen Leadership Scholarship is a $2000 per year renewable scholarship for a four-year total of $8,000. The scholarship is for incoming freshmen based on leadership and service commitments during high school. Priority will be given to students who represent economically and educationally disadvantaged groups or students who have participated in Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Stars and Stripes or other developmental/educational programs. Applicants must have: 1) minimum 21 ACT composite score or minimum SAT of 980 (SAT critical reading + math); 2) minimum 3.0 high school grade point average; and
3) demonstrate leadership and/or service throughout high school. Contact the Dean of Students Office at (251) 460-6172 for application information.
