Description
The Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship was named in memory of Mary Frank Morrow, who served as the first president of the North Carolina Classroom Teachers Association, and Edna Cotton Richards, an outstanding leader within the North Carolina Teachers Association and the North Carolina Association of Educators.
Mrs. Edna Cotton Richards was appointed Executive Secretary of the Division of Classroom Teachers of the North Carolina Teachers Association in 1959. She went on to hold many leadership and advisory positions within the NCAE and NEA until her retirement in 1981. Mrs. Richards was a lifelong teacher and leader.
Both women, through their diligent work and dedication to the teaching profession, led exemplary lives. This scholarship honors their distinguished careers.
Eligibility
Applicants must be North Carolina residents enrolled in a teacher-education program. They must be in the JUNIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE and willing to teach in the public schools of North Carolina for at least two (2) years following graduation.
Application Procedure
All applications should be made through a college or university. The head of the department of education in teacher training institutions is requested by the State NCAE President to select two juniors to receive application forms. Preference may begiven to children of NCAE members and to members of the Student NCAE as part of the selection process. Other selection criteria will be based on character, personality, scholastic achievement, evidence of promise as a teacher, and the financial need of the applicant. Other individuals meeting the above qualifications may request application forms from the State NCAE office.
