MSc Taught Course in Pharmacology and Drug Discovery, Oxford University UK

Course Aims

The overall aim of the MSc is to provide our students with the necessary training and practical experience enabling them to integrate post-genomic molecular biology with physiological function. These integrative skills are recognised as essential requirements in the pharmacological workplace, as such this course will be of particular value to those within or embarking upon a career in the pharmaceutical industry as well as those conducting research in an academic environment. The Department has a DPhil programme and students taking the MSc course will be eligible to apply.

Key Features

We enroll approximately 18 graduate students each year from a strong field of applicants. The teaching is carried out by Departmental staff. In addition, specialist external tutors including industrial pharmacologists deliver additional lectures, including drug discovery. Our students attend professional development seminars and receive training in experimental design, ethical review, communication and presentation.

Specifically at the end of the course our successful students will be able to:
•  Understand pharmacological principles and their clinical application
•  Apply an integrative and multidisciplinary approach to research investigation
•  Design experimental protocols
•  Critically appraise research methods and experimental results
•  Communicate research results and clinical implications to a wide audience

Careers

Pharmacology is a growth industry. Pharmaceutical companies are now recruiting intensively for people with a good grounding in basic pharmacological techniques. Our course is specifically tailored to meet this deficit in employees and as such our graduates enjoy preferential recruitment options. Our top graduates are often offered sponsored doctoral training within the department. All of our graduates have found jobs at the end of our course.

Application Procedure

Selection

Our applicants have a minimum of an upper second class undergraduate degree primarily in a biological or chemical science, but applications from high calibre candidates with mathematical and physical science backgrounds would be welcomed. We understand that the cost of undertaking a graduate course can often be a problem, we do have some bursaries and we encourage all applicants to apply.
Colleges who have supported our MSc Taught Course are Linacre, Wolfson, Lady Margaret Hall, St Cross, St Peter's, St Hilda's, New, Lincoln, Green, St Edmund Hall, Somerville, St Catherine's, Hertford and Oriel.
