Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan (PTSL)

Description:
The Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan is a competitive, merit-based scholarship-loan program created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1957. This program was designed to provide scholarship loans to qualified individuals who are pursuing college degrees to become teachers in the public schools of North Carolina.
Eligibility:
Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
  • Be recommended by a school official such as a high school guidance counselor or principal (high school applicants only)
  • Have maintained a minimum unweighted cumulative grade point average of a 2.5 or better
  • Have received a cumulative score of 900 or better on the SAT (math and critical reading sections only) or equivalent ACT score of 19 (high school applicants only)
  • Enroll as a full time student in a teacher preparation program at any of the eligible institutions in North Carolina
  • Demonstrate a commitment to pursue a degree to teach in the State's public schools

The Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan program no longer provides funding assistance for the following areas of study:
  • School Psychology
  • School Counseling
  • School Social Work
  • Speech/Language Pathology
  • Audiology
  • Library/Media Services
Application Procedure:
The application is available through an electronic application, which will be available in early February by clicking "Apply Now" under the Related Links section below.
The application deadline is April 15 of each year.
All supporting documentation (transcripts, certification forms, test scores) must be postmarked by the application deadline. Faxed copies of supporting documentation will no longer be accepted. Please refer to the Student Portal regularly for up-to-date account information and announcements.
Email is our official form of communication. If you do not have access to the internet at home, the local library is an option.
Please note that students who are current recipients of the Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship/Loan (FTNC), the Millennium Teachers Scholarship Loan, the NC Student Loan Program for Health, Science and Mathematics (HSM), the Teacher Assistant Scholarship/Loan (TASF), or the Teaching Fellows Program are not eligible to apply for the PTSL program.
